He has also worked extensively on capital investment projects and commercial contracts both in UK and in other parts of Europe, Asia and Africa.

He then ran his own consultancy business for the oil and chemical industry before retiring several years ago. He has retained his loyalty to his birth town as a Liverpool FC supporter, despite spending far more of his life in the Manchester area!

Alan Whitfield

Alan is originally from St Helens in Merseyside and lived in and around London for many years.  He moved to Stockport when he retired from employment, and joined Citizens Advice as a Trustee Director of Citizens Advice Stockport.  During his legal career, he specialised in technology and communications law and worked mostly in senior in-house roles for large international companies.  After leaving full-time legal practice, Alan was a part-time non-executive Director of an NHS organisation in the south of England, with responsibility for governance.

Alan is a keen country walker and takes advantage of living on the fringe of the Peak District to spend as much time as possible in the wilds of Cheshire and Derbyshire.  He tells us that this has kept him moderately sane during the COVID-19 periods of restriction.  His other principal leisure activity is ballroom dancing, which he took up relatively late in life and hopes will keep his body and his mind active for a few more years.

During the COVID-19 pandemic Alan also worked as an NHS Volunteer Responder, providing direct support to vulnerable people who were in isolation, mainly in Stockport and Tameside.

For Sarah the pandemic crystallised the imbalance within society and heightened the need for organisations such as Citizens Advice to ensure that all in the communities we serve, but especially the most vulnerable, have access to the best quality advice, guidance and parity of treatment which enables them to help create a brighter future for themselves.
